Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn was the greatest Dutch painter and one of the most important artists in the tradition of western European art.
Rembrandt was born in Leiden, and first trained there with Jacob Isaacsz. van Swanenburgh. In 1623-4 he worked with Pieter Lastman in Amsterdam. He returned to Leiden and established a studio (probably with Jan Lievens), and took on his first pupil, Gerrit Dou. He eventually moved permanently to Amsterdam in 1631/2.
In 1634 Rembrandt married Saskia van Uylenburgh (1612 - 1642). the cousin of a successful art dealer, enhanced his career, bringing him in contact with wealthy patrons who eagerly commissioned portraits. In 1649, after Saskia's death, Hendrickje Stoffels entered Rembrandt's household and in 1654 bore him a child. Rembrandt had become accustomed to living comfortably. From the time he could afford to, he bought ancient sculpture, Flemish and Italian Renaissance paintings, Far Eastern art, contemporary Dutch works, weapons, and armor. By the mid-1650s he was living so far beyond his means that his house and his goods had to be auctioned to pay some of his debts. Unfortunately, the results of the auction were disappointing. His personal life, however, continued to be marred by sorrow, for his beloved Hendrickje died in 1663, and his son, Titus, in 1668. Eleven months later, on October 4, 1669, Rembrandt died in Amsterdam.
Rembrandt was initially successful as a portrait painter, and the self portraits he made throughout his life provide us with a remarkable pictorial autobiography.
Rembrandt, however, probably thought of himself primarily as a history painter, and this type of work is represented in the collection by 'Belshazzar's Feast', 'The Woman taken in Adultery' and a number of other paintings of religious subjects.
