Pre-Raphaelite Oil Paintings

Form in 1848 as a reaction to fake and pompous academic painting, the British Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was the art world's first secret society. After daring to criticize Raphael as a poseur, the group was virulently attacked by no less an authority than Charies Dickens, who call on of their pictures "mean, odious, revolting and repulsive." The short-lived group disbanded in 1853. A literary gang, they liked Chaucer, Tennyson, and Keats. Their pictures were known for luminous color, lots of details, and allegorical symbolism.

The main artists:
Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882)
A writer who launched the group and then started painting.

William Holman Hunt (1827-1910)
Made detailed religious paintings with lots of symbolism.

John Everett Millais (1829-1890)

Edward Coley Burne-Jones (1833-1898)
Came after the Pre-Raphaelites, but adopted their love for medieval and mythical subjects.
