Diego de Velazquez Paintings

Diego de Velazquez (1599-1660) once traveled to Rome to study from 1629 to 1631 and between 1649 and 1651. Velazquez was appointed by King Philip IV as the court painter in 1623, and he remained the king's court painter for the rest of his life.

The brushstrokes in Velazquez's paintings are loose which, up close, looking like a jumble of crisscrossing brushstrokes. But when you step back, those loose strokes form a sharp image.

Many of Velazquez's early works are influenced by Caravaggio. But later on, the Caravaggio elements are simply one of the many ingredients in Velazquez's unique style. Los Borrachos (The Drunkards) (1629) and Joseph's Bloody Coat Brought to Jacob (1630) are among Velazquez's most Caravaggio-like paintings.

One of Velazquez's most famous paintings, Las Meninas (The Maids of Honor), is really two paintings, and possibly more. The viewer sees one of the paintings in the mirror. The painter, Velazquez, is in the process of painting either the figures you see in the picture or a portrait of King Philip IV and his queen Marie Anne of Austria, whose reflections appear in the mirror.
