In May 1890, Van Gogh painted four floral still lifes. He described this one as a “big bunch of violet irises… against a pink background in which the effect is soft and harmonious because of the combination of greens, pinks, violets.” The red lake pigment that Van Gogh used in this painting has faded, so now the irises appear blue and the background, almost white.
