In the hope of cheering up his brother at the asylum at Saint-Remy, Theo van Gogh sent Vincent van Gogh art supplies and black-and-white reproductions of drawings by Jean-Francois Millet (1814-1875). This painting is Vincent van Gogh’s colorful interpretation of one of those images.
