Gustave Caillebotte Paintings

Gustave Caillebotte (1848-1894), was an engineer and amateur painter who met Monet and Renoir at Argenteuil in 1874. He adopted Impressionist ideas, and helped materially by buying pictures; at his death he left sixty-five works to the state. Renoir was his executor, and, despite Caillebotte's provision that the bequest must be accepted as a whole, Caillebotte was forced to agree to partial acceptance only, to avoid a total rejection. Eight out of sixteen Monets, seven of eighteen Pissarros, six of eight Renoirs, six of nine Sisleys, two of three Manets, two of four Cezannes, but all seven Degas, were eventually accepted. This was the first entry of Impressionist works into a State museum, and as late as this an academic painter could still refer to Impressionist pictures as 'filth'.
